Hiring: How and Who do I Hire?

As an entrepreneur, ideas probably flow easily to you. You know where you want to go with your business. However, the needle seems to be stuck when it comes to growth. Maybe that’s because you need to hire help when it comes to implementation? Or maybe your business ideas are a little bit too vague and you need some clarity? Perhaps, your vision is crystal clear, but it’s a matter of prioritizing tasks within your business?

If any (or all) of this sounds familiar, keep reading. I’ve got some key areas for you to consider.

Do You Have A Mission Statement?

I have no doubt you are familiar with the “why” behind your business. But, have you taken the time to consider and establish the mission statement of your business?

When you have a mission statement in place, you can run EVERYTHING you do in your business through it and ask yourself, “Does this further my mission statement?” If this answer is “no” then it shouldn’t be a priority. This includes hiring help. You have to be clear on YOUR mission statement and values to make sure the people you choose to work with, will be a good fit for your business and clients.  So, what does a mission statement look like? To dive deeper into this, let’s take a look at some of the world’s leading businesses and what their mission statements are.

Amazon – ““To be Earth’s most customer-centric company, where customers can find and discover anything they might want to buy online, and endeavors to offer its customers the lowest possible prices.””

Google – “Our mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”

Apple – “To bring the best personal computing products and support to students, educators, designers, scientists, engineers, businesspersons and consumers in over 140 countries around the world.”

Berkshire Hathaway – “To deliver the right parts exactly on time, exceed our internal and external customer requirements through continuous improvement, and provide a place for hard-working, dedicated, knowledgeable and ethical people who believe in the company.”

If you don’t have a mission statement already, you can use these as inspiration. (Or – sign up for my strategic hiring VIP day, where I walk alongside you to get that mission statement just right).

Track Where Your Time Is Currently Going

When you’re a business owner, it’s so easy to get caught up in the ‘doing’ of our business that we don’t REALLY pay attention to how our time is being spent. Once you have an idea of where the majority of your time goes, you can assess whether or not those tasks can be outsourced. For example, often business owners spend HOURS on things like invoicing or content creation. In reality, these tasks could easily be automated and/or outsourced.   One of the most important things to remember when running a business is just because you CAN do it, doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Your time is valuable and if something can be outsourced or automated – DO IT!

Consider Your Hiring Needs & Budget

Now that you’ve tracked where your time is going, what’s next? It’s time to consider what you would like to continue doing and what you’d like to outsource.

One of the beautiful things about the online world is that there are so many “hiring” options. I guarantee that whatever you need done, there’s someone within the online world that LOVES to do that. You can hire someone to do everything from your taxes and bookkeeping to your social media management or online community management.

You can also decide the length of time you’d like to hire someone. Maybe you need consistent help within your business, on repeatable tasks. Or perhaps you just need to hire a contractor for a one-time special project. The length of time, along with the cost is super important to consider.
